A Systems Design for a Prototype Space Colony

6 .133 In each category, activities are listed which would require facilities. For each facility type, their number, size, and total area are projected, along with explicatory commentary. The table forms the bulk of this section; the text will only amplify certain aspects of the list. The concept of a housing stock unit was first introduced in Section V.3.2. Provision of adaptable units which accommodate changing populations would suit the projected lifestyle of the colony. Units, retaining their identity, could serve equally as one family's home, three apartments for young professionals, or a duplex for two childless couples. When the colony is constructed, housing stock units would be "roughed out": structure placed; environmental services provided; edge definitions between _public ways and semiprivate spaces created. Units would be assigned to the colony work force following-spin-up and particularized to their owner's wishes. The disposition of units in the colony segmenti is discussed in Section VI.12 . 5. Educational facilities would serve as the primary location for programs for both children and adults. Training programs would use school areas for incoming colonists. In addition, education programs would make use of spectator facilities, active sports areas, and active cultural spaces. The small size of the colony would allow these to be located anywhere, although staffing requirements should bring certain facilities closer to the school. The town meeting space located in the colony center would be an "outdoor" space, requiring no built enclosed areas. Most active sports activities could also take place outside although built spaces would be provided. The larger auditorium might be an indoor-outdoor amphitheater with enclosed stage and support areas. Fine arts studios and most of the entertainment spaces could be located outdoors. A significant advantage of locating many activities outdoors or in , facilities with changeable outdoor-indoor enclosures is that their life would energize the public spaces and draw attention to particular points. This street life "energy" would make the colony feel like a collection of enjoyable experiences and not a singular vessel whose
