A Systems Design for a Prototype Space Colony

7.61 Subject to the reservations expressed in Section VII.5.2.3,the hull minor stiffeners will be assumed to be rectangular in cross section with width 4 cm and depth 16 cm. In the bulkheads the stiffener cross section will be 3 cm x 12 cm. With regard to the major stiffeners, refer again to Section VII . 5. 2. 4 . by 2 .1. 0 8 is taken to be the material yield stress divided max oe max t from equation 2: 4 . 924xl0 8 N/m 2 71,400 psi 0. 04m 4 cm w = 1.75 d (minimum spacing) from equation 3: X = d from equation 1: d = 2. 55 t = 10 cm These bolts would be extremely large and would require Tee stiffeners with a cap over 60 cm long. Such dimensions seem unreasonable in light of the fact that the plates are only 4 cm thick. Unfortunately, a further analysis of this question is beyond the scope of this report. For the preliminary design, however, an alternate scheme is proposed which may provide the required strength. Each fastener used has a diameter equal to the plate thickness, 4 cm. Two rows of fasteners are used offset along the longitudinal axis and spaced 4 cm from edge of hole to plate edge. The resulting Tee stiffener has a cap 44 cm long and a short leg 20 cm long. The flanges are all 4 cm thick. This scheme is shown in Figure 7.21.
