A Systems Design for a Prototype Space Colony

7.Bl0 VII.B.5: CONCLUSIONS Notice that in both the torsional and bending vibration problems no structural damping was included. This is due to the fact that the all-steel structure used in the colony has negligible structural damping and any excited vibration will continue for a long time before dying out. Because of this fact, it was felt that choosing 2.5 cycles per second for the entire lifetime of the colony would be adequately conservative for the fatigue analysis done in Section VII.5. Likewise, it has been shown that an alternating stress equal to 10% of the working stress is more than adequate for the fatigue analysis. A further, more comprehensive dynamic analysis is needed for this structure, especially dealing with the bulging mode which may be excited during pressurization.
