A Systems Design for a Prototype Space Colony

8.18 VIII.4.4.4: Milling Machine for Major Stiffeners: A fairly large vertical head milling machine is needed to finish the edges of the pieces of major stiffeners. This mill takes the strips produced by the light section mill, which are up to Sm long and 120 mm wide, and mills the edges square or tapered. There rectangular pieces will eventually be electron beam welded together to form the finalized major stiffeners of either X or T cross section. The major stiffeners are either 5 or 20 meters long. The milling machine required to work these sections has the following specifications: Dimensions Mass Power Output 6m x 2m x 2m 24 T 72 kW Pieces for one complete major stiffener every 11.3 hours. VIII.4.4.5: Milling Machine for Minor Stiffeners: The minor stiffeners are simple rectangles in cross section but must be precisely milled out of the square stock that the light rolling mill produces. A stiffener is roughly 20 mm by 50 mm and 1000 mm long. One minor stiffener is needed every 1.75 min and it is estimatec that at least there milling machines with the following characteristics are required: Dimensions Mass Power Output Each Mill 2m x 2m x 2m 4 T 12 kW 1 per 5 min Total (3) 6m x 2m x 2m 12 T 36 kW 1 per 1.75 min VIII.4.5: Additional Manufacturing Equipment and Procedures: VIII.4.5.1: Automated Control: Located in the manufacturing area is an automated control/information processing unit (IPU) which has several important responsibilities. First, it is the master inventory control file keeping track of every piece that goes into the
