NASA CR-2357 Feasilibility Study of an SSPS

Therefore, it is recommended that the controllability studies be expanded before steps are taken to resize the baseline system. Conclusions.— The flight control performance evaluation of the baseline system and its nominal structural design found the SSPS to be well within a ±1 deg attitude control specification about all three major axes. The results of parametric studies indicated that, although attitude error performance decreases with structural stiffness, a 50% decrease in structural weight (and commensurate reduction in structural stiffness) will still allow the SSPS to remain well within attitude control requirements about all three axes. On the basis of these results it was concluded that structurally the baseline SSPS is over- designed about all three axes. However, as suggested, additional studies should be conducted before a structural redesign is undertaken.
