PURPOSE The purpose of Volume I of this document is to provide an abstract of the more technically explicit information contained in Volume II concerning the preliminary assessment of the impact of the Satellite Power System (SPS) on the environment, for the edification of the interested layman. INTRODUCTION This preliminary environmental assessment of the Satellite Power System reference design is of necessity based on existing research and analytical results. Some additional research has either been started or is contemplated, but it is still too early for this work to be a factor in the present evaluation. Where the data base is now inadequate, it has been necessary to either make preliminary assessments with appropriate caveats or to defer evaluation pending further development of the state of the art.
