- the '’smoothed” Western European coastline is about twice as long as the U.S. coastline, - the water near the Western European coast is averagely not as deep as near the U.S. coast, and - if one considers 300 km as limit for surface electricity transportation, only 5 of the 34 present load centers were out of reach from offshore rectennas. II.2 STATUS OF WESTERN EUROPEAN ELECTRICITY SUPPLY AND DEMAND FORECASTS II.2.1 General Remarks This section proved to be the most difficult one of part II of this study. The main reason for this was the lack of a reasonable and consistent data basis for Western Europe as we defined it in the previous section. Even for the EC only little and incomplete data were available. Consequently this section will be rather global and we decided to make only some statements on particular items. This field of interest is declared as an urgent and necessary in-depth study for a potential European SPS programme in our study recommendations in part III. II.2.2 Present Hardware Status The most usual power generation options are listed in tab. 2.1 together with some data.
