ESA European Aspects of SPS

Fig.2.13.3: POSSIBLE HUMAN HEALTH EFFECTS BY SPS MICROWAVES [ Source: 78/58 ] 1.2.13.5 Impacts of the Beam on Technical Services A microwave beam may affect other technical services which cross the beam, such as satellites or aircraft, by its RF- power density or its frequency. In this cases, the technical systems have to be made shure against any impact (shielding, different orbits, other flight paths). These impacts will generate minor problems says the literature. Another kind of disturbance to technical services is radiofrequency-interference (RFI). RFI is currently expected as one of the most serious problems which might prevent the introduction of SPS’s. Three categories of RFI may occur: A. Direct interference with communications at 2.450 GHz and at harmonics thereof, B. Mutual interference with other geosynchronous services C. Interference as a result of ionospheric excitation (compare to 1.2.3.2) .
