ESA European Aspects of SPS

II.1 GEOGRAPHICAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR WESTERN EUROPEAN SOLAR POWER SATELLITES 11.1.1 General Remarks The purpose of this section is to identify and roughly analyse particular aspects of SPS due to the geographical situation of Western Europe. Since the USA is limited to nearly 50° northern latitude and Europe exeeds 70° N, several potential problems may occur beeing different or more severe compared to those, which have been analysed in the USA. These problems are expected to be in the field of rectenna siting and environmental compatibility of microwave power transmission. II.1.2 Geographical Area of Western Europe For the scope of these investigations it proved useful to define a set of countries in Europe which shall be taken into consideration. Since the EC is not fixed to a certain number of countries because of its growing potential, we selected the following countries and call them furtheron ’’Western Europe” (States in the size of Liechtenstein or Andorra are included but not listed): Portugal Spain Italy Greece France Switzerland Ireland United Kingdom Belgium Netherlands Luxembourg West-Germany Denmark Iceland Norway Sweden Finland Austria The geographical area of these countries is shown in fig. 1.1. The longitude range is from 24° W to 30° E and the latitude range is from 36° N to 72° N. Several Eastern European and some North-African and Middle-East states are located or partly located also within this latitude and logitude range. These are: USSR East-Germany Poland Czechoslovakia Hungary Romania Bulgaria Algeria Yugoslavia Albania Turkey Tunesia
