PART I. For example, a microwave experiment should involve the advanced demonstrator orbiting for several days in formation with a target spacecraft. Thus, as the target's orbit slowly decays, the demonstrator must be able to match the descent. When the target performs an orbit-raising manoeuvre, the demonstrator should be able to keep within range so as to continue power beaming immediately after orbit-raising. For a laser experiment, operational demonstrations would also be important, particularly in the areas of long-range, high-precision tracking of a moving target. However, perhaps more critically, an advanced laser demonstrator should be used to prove design concepts for a high-power space qualified laser.
