1992 Eurospace Powersat FInal Report

Summary The availability of a high power/high efficiency laser system is the key to making this option technically attractive. The high orbit of 7.500 km ensures nearly 100% coverage during the eclipse period and. thereby, minimises the battery replacement requirements and keeps the station-keeping propellant mass the same as the 37.5 kW configuration - even though the available power on the station has effectively doubled. It allows relatively conventional technology to be used for the Powersat bus subsystem, including the use of solar panels. This option also allows the possibility of other low Earth orbit users to use the Powersat during eclipse passages.
