1992 Eurospace Powersat FInal Report

• Columbus Precursor Missions (Shuttle launched) Eureca-3. Space lab E-1. • Space Shuttle launch of small pay loads. GAS Complex Autonomous Pay load (CAP). Hitchhiker G & M. ♦ Others Possible Opportunities. Astro-SPAS. SPARTAN. MAXUS/MASER sounding rockets, Small launch vehicles. Russian piggy-back options. Each of these launch options are discussed in the following subsections. 3.1 Ariane 4/ASAP Arianespace has the capability to launch up to six small or “micro” satellites on Ariane 4. This is achieved through the use of the Ariane Structure for Auxiliary Pay loads, or ASAP, that is located on top of the Ariane 4 Vehicle Equipment Bay. (Figure 3.1-1) This structure has already been used twice for the launch of UoSAT. Amsat and other payloads. It can accommodate an aggregate total mass of 200 kg. with a maximum of 50 kg for any one particular satellite. The maximum dimensions of each individual satellite is a cube of 0.45 m x 0.45 m x 0.45 m. [3] However, a waiver can be obtained to increase the height of the pay load to 0.6-0.7 m provided it does not interfere in any way with the primary pay load. This was the case with UoSAT 3. 4 & 5 for example. [4]
