IV. POWER STATION The power station of the SPS consists of a Solar Energy Collection System (SECS), which converts solar energy into electricity; a Microwave Power Transmission System (MPTS), which converts the electricity into microwave energy and transmits it to Earth; and a Microwave Reception and Conversion System (MRCS), which converts the microwave energy into electricity suitable for interface with a distribution grid. These elements of the power station are depicted in figure IV-1. The purpose of this part of the study was to explore the factors involved in the design of the power station. This involved evaluating the power output of individual satellites, methods and efficiencies of energy conversion and transmission, requirements and design approaches to system elements, weights of equipment and material in orbit, and the orbital characteristics of the satellites.
