The payload compartment shown in Figure 4.4-1 will accommodate an OTV stage and the CRM. The vehicles are properly phased upon their return to LEO and are reloaded into a "now-empty" ELV for transport back to earth. It was assumed that with earth refurbishment, an OTV could have a life cycle of 200 reuses. Thus, the reference transportation system concepts selected have been integrated with the operational requirements (e.g., assembly and logistics demands) to produce workable, cost-effective results.
