possible later salvage use or for permanent disposal. In this case it is important to have estimates of the cost of SPS satellite disposal. The objectives of this study are to find potential salvage uses for both the SPS demonstration and full-scale satellites, to determine the satellite salvage values for each potential use, to prioritize these uses in order to determine likely salvage value per satellite as a fraction of satellite capital cost and to determine the cost of disposal for unsalvaged satellites or portions thereof. 1.1 Background The salvage uses and values and disposal costs estimated in this study are based on the Rockwell International SPS satellite configuration and development program. The basic satellite configuration is shown in Figure 1.1 and its major pnysical characteristics are provided in Table 1.1.
