WORLD ENERGY CONSUMPTION BY REGION The energy demand of a region is the end product of individuals using energy and the requirements of their industry and government. As the region develops economically and the standard of living and population increases, the required total energy increases. This chart shows the relative increase in five areas of the world over the last 25 years and projects the usage for the next 25 years. The projection assumes an average annual worldwide energy demand growth of 4.2 percent per year. While this rate of growth may be debatable, there is no doubt that the desire of the people of the world for an increased standard of living will force an increased use of energy for all regions of the world. Since many regions import energy now, the U.S. energy requirement must be considered within the context of world demand. (Source - Stanford Research Institute, Center for Energy Studies - Late 1974)
