SSI Quick History: The Search For Lunar Water

Weekly stated "could alter human destiny," led directly to the founding of SSI. The question is simple: "Is the surface of a planet the best place for an expanding technological civilization?". A dozen freshmen in Dr. O'Neill’s course thought it through and came up with the undeniable answer: No. Space colonies, not planetary surfaces, provide the best means of breaking Earth’s chains and moving the human species into the Solar System. We have no need to answer the question again. The simplicity, the beauty, and the truth of the physics inherent in the answer have withstood the test of time. Twenty years later, SSI, continues to work, not in search of an answer, but to implement a solution we know will work to ensure a better future for all humanity. As a Senior Associate, you deserve special thanks for your essential role in building the Institute that will carry out this mission for the next twenty years - and beyond. We fully support SSI's Lunar Prospector mission and believe that it is not only an excellent scientific mission but a unique chance to send a signal to the private sector that NASA is actively fostering private space initiatives. We commend your decision to support SSI's Lunar Prospector mission and appreciate your timely response in this matter. This mission is an important and worthy one.
