SSI Quick History: The Search For Lunar Water

Cosmonaut Jean-Loup Chretien gets an explanation of the Lunar Telerobotic Simulator Display from designer Dave Brody at the Princeton Space Manufacturing Conference. This apparatus examines the working conditions which will be encountered by Earth-based operators conducting remote mining and construction activities on the moon. While switching between three video camera angles, and guiding robot movements via two hand controllers, the operator must work with a visual delay equal to a signal's round trip time between Earth and Moon. This simulator has been used to gather human performance data with a variety of test subjects. It has also been "test flown" by celebrities such as Hugh Downs (ABC's: 20/20), Jonathon Frakes (Star Trek’s "Commander Riker") and others.
