Titles Survey on potential of nuclear energy in space application Sources Proceedings of the First ISAS Space Energy Symposium, Institute of Space & Astronautical Science, 4-6-1 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153, Japan, Jan. 28-29, 1982. (Paper No. II-l) Authors: Tanatsugu, Nobuhiro <Institute of Space and Astronautical Science) Dates 01-28-82 Classifications u Keywords: space energy conversion, nuclear, alternative systems, transportation Abstract: In the present issue, the performance potential of nuclear energy in space application is surveyed and summarized in comparison with the conventional chemical energy or solar energy. The discussions are made mainly concerning the rocket propulsions and the electrical power generations. The nuclear power ATTACHMENT : plants using solid core reactors or radionuclides are already realized and therefore evaluated on the data of the operational or tested power plants.' The future ones, which are utopian ideas at present, are also appreciated in this discussion. In the section of rocket propulsion, the missions with the nuclear propulsion system are also referred and its possibilities are shown. Title: Fusion reactor can be realized only in space? Source: Proceedings of the First ISAS Space Energy Symposium, Institute of Space & Astronautical Science, 4-6-1 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153, Japan, Jan. 2B-29, 1982. Date: 01-28-82 Cl assification: u Keywords: alternative systems, nuclear, space energy conversion, novel concepts Abstract: Thermonuc 1 ear fusion research is considered as one of the strongest candidates of future energy resource, especially for Japan who has no other resources. In fusion research, two big streams of development are actively pursued: magnetically confined fusion and inertially (confined) fusion ATTACHMENT : (Fig. 1). As magnetically confined fusion, magnetically closed configuration and open configuration are employed. Tokamak and Stellarator are in the former and Mirror machine in the latter. As inertial confinement fusion, laser and high energy ion beam are used.
