The typical configurations of the 2-D array are shown in Fig. 8. As shown in the figure, these are classified according to overall shapes and structural constitutions. The key factors which effect the tradeoff study for selection of configurations are as follows: • weight per unit area; • simultaneous or sequential deployment of blanket and support structure; • simplicity in deploying/retracting mechanisms; • reliability in deploying/retracting operations; • stiffness or vibrational frequency; • inertial properties; • tension control mechanisms; • packaging density and stowed configuration; • target mission requirements.
