Traffic Zone The position of the tethered satellite must be compatible with the preliminary traffic pattern zones indicated in Fig. 2 (2). In the near vicinity (10 km or less) of the space station, there are three zones of interest: within 1 km (zone 1), docking and berthing vehicles such as the shuttle, the teleoperator maneuvering system (TMS), orbit transfer vehicles (OTVs), extravehicular astronauts (EVAs), etc., will be operating on a near-continuous basis. Zone 2 is the approach and rendezvous zone for these vehicles. Zone 3 is the departing zone. Tethering positions 2 and 4 in Fig. 1 are probably excluded for the nuclear satellite due to the anticipated shuttle rendezvous procedure as shown in Fig. 3. The shuttle
