Announcement SOLAR POWER SATELLITES: STATE OF THE ART JOHN W. FREEMAN, JR. Rice University Houston, Texas 77251 An international conference entitled “Solar Power Satellites: State of the Art” was held at the Ecole Superieure d’Electricite, Gif-Sur-Yvette, France on June 5th and 6th, 1986. The conference was attended by about 100 participants representing France, England, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands apd the USA. Simultaneous bilingual translations in French and English were available. Lucien Des Champs, Chairman of the Societe les Electriciens et des Electroni- ciens, served as organizer and Peter Glaser, Vice President of Arthur D. Little, was Chairman of the Program Committee. Sponsors for the conference included UNIPED, IEEE, Association Internationale FUTURIBLES, The Sunsat Energy Council, and The L5 Society. The conference was divided into five sessions: Solar Power Satellites; Development of Space Technologies; Energy Transmission; Solar Cells; and The Environment. After each day's papers a round table discussion was held to discuss and review the papers and debate relevant issues. In summary, twenty-eight excellent papers were presented and discussed. During the summary round table on the final day, it was concluded that the Solar Power Satellite concept holds great promise and should be receiving attention comparable to that being afforded to Nuclear Fusion. Several means were discussed to enhance the efforts on behalf of SPS. It was resolved that the European Research Community should be approached to provide greater support for SPS. The complete texts of the papers presented at the conference will appear in a forthcoming issue of Space Power.
