Algebraic equivalents are defined for the differentia1 equations by means of difference equations for spherical and planar transfer problems. The transformations are characterized for energy, population, abundances, and charge conservation and the moment and motion equations along a single ray. The Eddington factor is used to reduce the linear system to one equation per frequency and the Hermitian formula yields a set of linear equations that can be int egratecl over t h e ent ire radiation f i e1d. The connection between the difference and integral equations is noted, with the difference equations being linearized in terms of the local state of the medium. Account is taken of hydrostatic, statistical, and energy e qu i1i bri a cons tr ai n t s. Finally, tech n iques f or speeding up the computations are explored. (M.S.K.)
