ORBITAL OPERATIONS CONSIDERATIONS In order to arrive at some conclusions as to the best method of operating the photovoltaic system in orbit, one simply needs to understand the input and output variables and the basic mission/spacecraft constraints in relationship to the characteristics and capabilities of the system. The main factors that affect the orbital operation of the photovoltaic system are: (1) orbital parameters and environments, (2) mission and spacecraft operational modes and constraints, (3) load demand, and (4) the characteristics of the photovoltaic system under the influence of above variables and constraints. These considerations are briefly discussed below primarily from the standpoint of optimizing the orbital operation or utilization of the photovoltaic system. As will be illustrated, this optimization of orbital utilization via the DANMOE approach automtically results in optimization of array and battery sizes, along with a probable extension of battery life.
