Table II. Intercalation compounds of graphite fibres with metal chlorides. intercalation conditions, and around 10 for the fibres. This figure demonstrates that the pertinent parameters, if we want to get a very high conductivity material, is the initial resistivity; in other terms, it is necessary to start from the most highly crystallized material. 2. Mechanical properties. As already pointed out, good mechanical properties are crucial for potential applications. We have therefore carried out stress-strain traction experiments on monofilaments on a batch of ex meso U.C. P 100 fibres before and after CuCl2 intercalation. The obtained results (mean values issued from 18 experiments) exhibit a simultaneous decrease of Young's modulus (E) and tensile strength cr by about 50%. It must be noted, however, that in any case these mechanical characteristics remain much larger than for good conducting metals [15].
