Diverse Space Power Applications The NDR is the only power technology that can meet both short- and long-term space power needs. The NDR has unique characteristics and substantial margins that permit significant flexibility for growth, and diverse space power applications. Schematics of different space power systems using the NDR are illustrated in Fig. 4. Burst Power By integrating the NDR with open cycle turbo-generators, burst power systems can be readily designed for power outputs ranging from several megawatts to 100s of megawatts. The reactor coolant and power cycle working fluid is hydrogen. The NDR design is the baseline concept already described. For the different power levels, it is only necessary to vary the fuel element-to-support element ratio to yield the minimum mass design. Bimodal Power Systems The burst power systems discussed above require continuous housekeeping power to operate the instrumentation and control systems and to start up the power system.
