We shall consider three possible systems to utilize the output of this reactor: (a) both direct and thermal power conversion, (b) direct conversion only, (c) thermal conversion only. Block diagrams of these three systems are shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 respectively. We assume that the direct converter has an efficiency of 80% and that the thermal converter has an efficiency of 40%. The accelerator requires an input of 1% of the electric power, utilizing it at 50% efficiency. Thus the output powers, Pe (electric power) and P,h (thermal power) total to 99% of the raw output of 55.8 MW per cubic meter of reactor volume.
