Space Solar Power Review. Vol 8 Nums 1&2 1989

Finally, not knowing the user specifications, we can only make a very crude estimate of mass for the power conditioning system. We shall assume Component masses and overall specific power for each of the three options are given in Tables I, II and III for electric output powers ranging from 1 to 104 MW. In the case of direct and thermal conversion, the specific power is limited by reactor (magnet) mass up to about 50 MWe, then the mass of the direct converter becomes the limiting factor. Specific powers range from 47 kWe per Mg for a 1 MWe system to 4 kWe per Mg for a 10 GWe system. This system may be of interest for power outputs comparable to SP-100. The system with direct conversion only is similarly limited by reactor mass in the smaller sizes and by direct converter mass in the larger sizes. The specific powers are less overall than the first system, however. The migma reactor with thermal conversion is limited throughout by reactor mass, and since this mass goes linearly with power output, specific power is more or less constant at 40 kWe per Mg. It is unlikely that the scaling law on direct converters can be improved enough to change these qualitative conclusions, however a breakthrough was recently made that had a profound effect on magnet mass. 5. The Exyder Concept The notion of producing a diamagnetic well in an initially near-uniform field using beam current was always somewhat worrisome. Blewett [11] recently pointed out that ring dipoles could be substituted for the migma solenoid to transform the weak- focusing field into an alternating-gradient strong-focusing field. Moreover, by using inner and outer dipoles of opposite sign, a magnetic wall could be erected on which to turn the beam. The result is a hardware-produced magnetic well that has all the advantages for synchrotron suppression that were envisioned for the diamagnetic migma system without the worry of encountering instability while trying to ‘dig' the well. The overwhelming advantage of the new system, which we call Exyder for xy- collider, is that the magnetic mass can be vastly reduced.
