Microgravity conditions have a serious influence since phase separation is necessary. In the case of the mobile KOH and the PEM electrolyzer, an electrolyte/gas or water/gas mixture has to be separated. The volume of gases and liquids are similar, and the gas bubbles are very small due to microgravity. Technologies for separation under microgravity conditions (centrifuges, membrane technologies, etc.) have not been investigated or proven to be effective. In the case of the mobile KOH system, the handling of such a corrosive electrolyte might cause additional problems. In the case of the immobile KOH electrolyzer, the phase separation is performed directly in the porous electrodes, so that only humidified product gases are leaving the stack.
