The expectation case analysis was used to calculate an individual risk of fatality as a result of the mission. Table V compares the individual risk with Census Bureau data on other risks routinely faced. The Galileo mission presents a risk one order of magnitude less than any other risk listed. Finally, our colleagues at DOE have collected data on the variability of the natural radiation background. In many instances, the doses resulting from accidents are less than would be accumulated by simply changing residence from the United States to Paris, France. I expect that the deciding official will make a qualitative assessment of the great scientific and technological benefits of the mission in comparison to the very small risks and decide to complete and operate the mission.
