Space Power Volume 9 Numbers 2&3 1990

The GFS calculated system mass, to meet all the generic technical specification requirements, is 4460 kg. This mass is the system mass required to meet a generic specification. The generic specifications and the GFS design were re-examined in paralled with the latest projected future mission requirements resulting in minor changes to the system requirements as summarized in the second column in Table 1. The reference mission earth orbit was selected at 1100 km, the launch vehicle was changed from the Shuttle (STS) to the Titan IV. The space reactor power system mass and stowed length goals were changed. These minor systems requirement changes, which make the power system more mission specific rather than designing for all missions, result in a reduced system mass of 3960 kg. The mass breakdowns by subsystems for the GFS system at 100 kWe and for this updated GFS at 100 kWe are shown in Table III. Additional effort will be expended during the GES phase to further reduce the system mass and to update the system requirements based on updated projected military and civilian space mission requirements.
