Westinghouse System description. Westinghouse has developed a system designed to provide electrical power in the 10s of MW range using a NERVA derivative reactor operating with hydrogen in an open Brayton cycle. Figure 12 shows the concept and illustrates the location of major system components within a protective thermal and space debris shield. The power system is designed such that it can be separated from the user platform. This enables the power system to escape a distressed platform, allows for separate disposal, and enables on orbit replacement of a faulty power system.
