Using results of the previous sections one can show that the optimal illumination taper minimizes the penalty function: The illumination taper for Dmin = 0.8Dmax> t0=1.7 and tj0=0.85 is shown in fig.ll. It provides more than a 50 percent increase in power transmitted compared with the taper shown in fig.3 (Dmin = 0.6Dmax is the maximum range of distance changes allowed). Thus, using the appropriate form of the penalty functions one can optimize various characteristics of such an adaptive system: electricity cost [5], sidelobe level [6], etc. Calculation of Systems Characteristics As an example, in order to compare the characteristics of the tapers generated by calculations based on eq.
