The main interest of this initial demonstrator lies not only in its cost but in the large number of flight opportunities provided by the Ariane launch schedule. This type of experiment could be organised very soon, within Europe or with international participation, and, in any case, several years before a laser transmission experiment with sufficient power could be performed. Due to the importance of the energy problem for the Earth’s environment and the necessity of starting as soon as possible, the technological development needed for the preparation of future SPS’s, EUROSPACE believes that this demonstration programme deserves to be taken into consideration by the UN Earth Summit Conference in Rio.
