Space Solar Power Review. Vol 11 Num 3&4. 1992

Hydrogen Fuel Production Figure 13 shows a plant using Martian water ice to produce H2 and O2 fuel, at an O/F mass ratio of 7.94:1. Excess oxygen will be produced compared to engine requirements of O/F = 5.5:1 by mass. This plant configuration is primarily presented as a comparison for the others. Note the very high electrical power requirements for the refrigeration and liquefaction of the hydrogen. Figure 13. Mass and energy flow diagram included for comparison purposes of a electrolysis plant using Martian water and producing an O/F ratio Of 8:1. Process Comparisons It is not yet possible on the basis of the present work and prior literature to rationally select any process as superior, or reject any of those presented here as inferior, particularly as many important engineering factors influencing power demand, mass, and cost have not yet been addressed. Thus no summary table is included, as it might lead the casual reader to draw such conclusions.
