General SPS Options GEO Based Systems For a geosynchronous orbit the following SPS options, all designed to deliver 5 GW electrical output on Earth and using microwave transmission with 2,45 GHz, have been considered: • a-Si photovoltaic • mono-crystalline Si state-of-the-art photovoltaic • mono-crystalline Si advanced photovoltaic (t+20 years) • GaAlAs photovoltaic • Si photovoltaic sandwich concept (t+20 years) [9] • solar dynamic Due to the higher assumed efficiency of the solar dynamic option (30 % for solar to electricity conversion) the specific mass (kg/kW) of this system is of significant importance, as illustrated in figure 9. Furthermore, there is little reliable data available on the ACE for the production of solar dynamic modules. This results in a large uncertainty with regard to the energetic amortization time of the solar dynamic option.
