SSI 50: Medicine, Health, and Life-Support Panel Announced

July 1, 2019

The Space Studies Institute has announced the speaker lineup for the Medicine, Health, and Life Support panel at its upcoming 50th anniversary conference.
SSI 50: The Space Settlement Enterprise takes place September 9-10 at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington.
The Medicine, Health, and Life Support panel will be chaired by Dr. Jim Logan, former chief flight surgeon at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.
The other speakers on the panel will be NASA astronaut/physician  Dr. Yvonne Cagle (Colonel, USAF-ret.);  Joe Carroll, president of Tether Applications, who is researching designs for artificial-gravity systems; Dr. John Charles, recently retired as chief scientist at NASA’s Human Research Program; and Morgan Irons, a graduate researcher at Cornell University College of Agriculture who is working on ways of turning lunar regolith into useful soil for agriculture.
The two-hour panel will discuss radiation protection, artificial gravity, life support, and food production for space settlements.

 About the Conference

SSI 50: The Space Settlement Enterprise celebrates the 50th anniversary of the High Frontier vision of space settlement created by Princeton University physics professor and Space Studies Institute founder Gerard O’Neill. Professor O’Neill demonstrated that it was possible to build very large space habitats using extraterrestrial materials and foreseeable technologies. O’Neill’s vision inspired a generation of followers, including one young Princeton student, Jeff Bezos, who went on to found Amazon and Blue Origin.
SSI 50 marks the kickoff for a multi-year effort by the Space Studies Institute to update the High Frontier vision, incorporating new technologies, new knowledge of solar system resources, and new commercial space capabilities developed by companies such as Blue Origin.
SSI 50 will include six panel sessions. In addition to Medicine, Health, and Life Support, panel sessions will cover Habitat Design,  Construction Techniques, Extraterrestrial Resources, Transportation and Logistics,  and Economic Prosperity.
Additional panel lineups will be announced in the near future.
Tickets for the conference are $25 off this week during our special Fourth of July sale. Use the discount code 4July25 for $25 off the regular registration rate.
