The Space Studies Institute has been releasing cleaned, searchable, readable volumes from our decades of being a United States depository of NASA, DOE, DOD and contractor Space-Based Solar Power research. There are many already and there are hundreds more to come, given time and money.
So what are THESE things? Why aren’t they put in the Reports Library list with the others? What makes them so different?
When you look into the government reports, you see that they mostly all start with a mention of Dr. Peter Glaser, the man who did the real first patentable work on the subject. But then the government documents tend to focus in on some distinct aspect of the SPS/SBSP reference designs, or take a deep dive into some very singular sub-piece of the whole.
What THESE documents are more about is the bigger pictures and also some alternative specifics to the standard reference designs that could get the final desired product – an actual in-orbit SPS – doing the most good for the most people on planet Earth more quickly.
Another difference is that these journals were not published by taxpayer dollars, these were published by the support of people around the globe who worked with and for an organization called The SUNSAT Energy Council.
SUNSAT was founded in late 1977 by Dr. Peter Glaser to promote production of electric power on earth from solar energy captured in space.
This is obvious and simple for anyone reading this page today, but at the time it was an odd concept and Dr. Glaser knew that it needed great minds to get the word out on many levels.
The Council was comprised of some of the biggest names in ‘the space’: Glaser, Brown, Nagatomo, Canough, Maryniak, Cutler, Koomanoff, Caristo-Verrill, Freeman, Leonard, Mayur and more. They did conferences, they gathered and taught at the early ISUs, they did private closed-door meetings in their association with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and they brought SPS to the public.
You have to remember though, that the world was not like it is now, there was no internet, and no website or discord was around to bring the latest works to all of the right people inside and in the orbit of SUNSAT. So, in 1980 the council created a special exclusive journal. Originally titled “Space Solar Power Review” (later shortened to simply “Space Power”) the quarterly releases covered what the real movers of the movement were thinking and doing.
Space Solar Power Review releases were not always perfectly timed for delivery on each quarter, they seemed to have been released when enough information was worth passing along. But they were expertly edited, first by Dr. John Freeman of the Space Solar Power Research Program at Rice University, then by Dr. Andrew Cutler of the Space Studies Institute and the NASA Space Engineering Center at the University of Arizona, and finally by Dr. Gay Canough, particle physicist from University of Notre Dame (the person whose work was behind the N.E.A.R. mission’s early plans, a founding faculty member of the ISU, the woman who founded Extraterrestrial Materials, Inc. and put together the ties between Dr. Alan Binder and SSI for the water-finding Lunar Prospector probe, who calculated the terrestrial space equivalents for John Mankin’s NASA “Fresh Look” SPS study, co-founder of the New York Solar Industry Association and trainer of literally hundreds of hands-on Solar Energy professionals in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and… the wonderful person who scoured her offices to fill in the gaps in the SSI collection with her personal copies of Space Power so that we could do this very special tribute on ssi.org).
Say a hello of thanks to Dr. Canough…
Space Solar Power Review / Space Power was a scholarly journal, there was occasionally some greek math, but for the most part anyone with an interest could pick up a copy and get significant value out of it. The problem with this legendary journal has never been the difficulty of the content, it has only been… the getting of a copy to read.
And now, thanks to donations to the SSI Research Library over the years, and to Dr. Canough’s recent assistance, we proudly deliver your 14 years of copies of Space Solar Power Review / Space Power, the Journal of the SUNSAT Energy Council.
Special Thanks along with Dr. Canough go out to former SSI Executive Vice President and President of the SUNSAT Energy Council Gregg Maryniak, to John Mankins, President of Mankins Space Technology and all around SPS dare-we-say-‘god’, and to Dr. Paul Jaffe of DARPA for getting this project ball rolling with his question in London: “When is SSI going to release Space Power, already?”, everyone really interested in this realm should consider Dr. Jaffe’s “Power Beaming: History, Theory, And Practice” written along with Tom Nugent, Bernd Strassner and Mitchel Szazynski and available on Amazon (ISBN: 978-9811243103).
In putting together this new collection, in reading every single page as we cleaned them for you, we came to understand why Dr. Jaffe thought these are still so important… it’s a little annoying but also very interesting and helpful to be able to see that the most useful things have not changed.
